MTech Project

My M Tech Project started last year (July 2010).I got my project on Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) under Prof. Raja Datta. WSN is one of the fast growing research areas where lots of work have been done recently. There are some basic limitations of wireless sensors like small size, processing power, low-battery power and Sensing range. The challenge is to how overcome these limitations and exploit these small sized sensors when they work as a network. Their applications are Battle Field Surveillance, Environment Monitoring, Health Monitoring, Machine or Euipment monitoring and many more..

WSN as a whole is a  huge area and as an M tech project we should select a comparatively smaller area as our research area.  I choose the Power efficiency of sensor nodes where we have to use various techniques and work scheduling algorithms to save battery power of the sensors, reason being to increase the lifetime of the sensors and of the network as a whole.

Topic of my project work is ” Energy Efficient Scheduling and Lifetime Maximisation among Multimedia Sensors”. Multimedia sensors are Audio / Acoustic sensors and Video sensors. So  initially my thought was of designing a technique where audio and video sensor nodes can collaborate with each other and with information sharing they can control each other’s working.

These multimedia sensors are capable of running small algorithms within themselves like Dynamic power management algorithm ect where nodes can swtich themselves OFF temporarily when their working is not required. So in application like Battle field surveillance audio nodes can detect enemy movements and inform video sensors(initially OFF)  about it. In return video sensors who is covering the target region switch itself ON, take picture or video and send the data to the base station. Video sensor’s battery power is of more concern than the audio sensors because data generated by video sensors is large in size and lots of energy is lost in their transmission. So the lesser and efficient they work.. better the lifetime of the network.
